There has been no shortage of horror movies at the box office in 2019, and the scares have had quite a large spectrum to run across. 47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED has one hell of a plan to distance itself from the pack: It’s planning on stealing every single breath you take while watching it. Take a look for yourself in the film’s big trailer leading up to its opening August 16.
The sequel to the runaway hit 47 METERS DOWN sees the franchise moving forward in a new tale in the grand tradition of humans versus sharks. In 47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED, the escape will be much more complex as four young women find themselves lost in a maze-like underwater city. With limited air and no idea of how to get out, this group of panicked tourists are already in deep water when a shiver of sharks find them.
47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED doesn’t involve any of the original cast — and to our knowledge hasn’t brought the previous sharks back for the sequel. It also has a new approach. Instead of confining the action to a steel enclosure in open water, a claustrophobic underwater city is the new cage. And it looks just as imposing, if not even more so. 
Just watching the trailer is enough to take your breath away, with tight spaces and quick edits hyping up 47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED’s central conceit. At least with the previous film, the only obstacle for its character was to get out of the cage and into the open water. A labyrinthian underwater city poses a whole new level of difficulty, which is exactly what any good sequel needs to continue the franchise. Still, if you’re afraid of enclosed spaces, you might want to tread lightly into this particular film.
47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED couldn’t have picked a better time to be released into theatres, as the winding down of the summer season can always use another splash of sun, sand and sharks. And with the surprise success of CRAWL proving there’s still a market for humans to swim into danger with various aquatic creatures, we could see another win scored in favor of the genre.
