JOHN WICK 4 opens in theatres on March 24th
The world is experiencing an extreme case of Keanu-mania these days, and it has come as a real benefit to the JOHN WICK franchise. Nearly a decade ago, the property came out of nowhere in the form of a cool movie that helped revitalize THE MATRIX star’s career and the action genre in general. Thus, it is no surprise that a fourth chapter is coming to AMC Theatres soon.
Fans have been waiting years now to see Keanu Reeves reprise his role as the world’s favorite globe-trotting, gun-fu-fighting assassin for the fourth time. Let’s go deeper into those details in our breakdown of all the most information regarding JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4, starting with when the titular anti-hero is set to come back for more.
John Wick: Chapter 4 Blazes Into AMC March
As we mentioned earlier, it has been four years since the last time we saw John Wick in action, which is more than fans of the franchise have had to wait between installments in the past. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 came out in 2017, three years after the 2014 original, and JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM was released just two years later in 2019.
Luckily, the wait will be over very soon. According to a video released by Lionsgate in 2022, JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 is currently set for a theatrical release of March 24, 2023.
Wick Takes On The High Table
The overarching narrative of the JOHN WICK movies has, essentially, been one of revenge, kicked off by the senseless murder of the title character’s new dog, forcing the recently widowed former assassin out of retirement. More recently in the story, things have been a tad bit more complicated, as Wick has truly managed to get under the skin of the all-powerful High Table of assassins. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM saw the hero avoid being killed after a global contract was put on his head.
Per Lionsgate’s official synopsis, as reported by Collider, JOHN WICK CHAPTER 4, will see him going to war against the High Table. The plus side is that he won’t be working alone, as he will have the support of the Bowery King and his vast network of spies all over New York City. Chad Stahelski – who is returning to direct after helming the first three films – has also revealed to Total Film that the new movie will see Wick “come to terms” with his actions and the consequences that follow.
Keanu Reeves And Others Return
A JOHN WICK movie without John Wick would just be incomplete, which is why it comes as no surprise that Keanu Reeves is coming back to the role that revamped his career as a living action movie legend. Also an executive producer on the film, the actor is set to reprise the character alongside Ana de Armas in a spin-off called BALLERINA. An an eventual fifth chapter, which Deadline reported in 2020 was originally intended to be filmed back-to-back with CHAPTER 4, could still be in the works, given Stahelski’s comments to Collider mentioning Lionsgate’s intention to continue the franchise.
Despite how massive the body count tends to be with these movies, Keanu Reeves is not the only franchise veteran on the JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 cast, including the actor’s MATRIX movies co-star Laurence Fishburne as The Bowery King. Also returning for what will be their fourth installment of the franchise alongside Reeves are Ian McShane as Continental Hotel manager, Winston, and Lance Reddick as his trusted concierge, Charon.
Newcomers Join The Franchise
As we established, a lot of characters tend to get lost in the action in the JOHN WICK movies, so it is no surprise that we have some new faces appearing in the JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 cast as well. For instance, we have Bill Skarsgård doing what he does best – playing an antagonistic role. Martial arts master Donnie Yen also stars as a highly-skilled warrior and an old frined of John Wick, as Deadline reports.
We also have another horror movie star in the form of Clancy Brown playing, as he described to Collider, “The Harbinger.” Another modern action star appears in the form of Scott Adkins, who tweeted that we will see his character, “Killa,” soon. Making her feature film debut, as Deadline learned from Chad Stahelski, is pop star Rina Sawayama. And also starring is Shamier Anderson of SyFy’s “Wynonna Earp” fame. Additional newcomers include ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL’s Marko Zaror in what Deadline describes as another villainous role and BULLET TRAIN star Hiroyuki Sanada, who previously worked with Reeves on 47 RONIN.
