Our Top 3 Wolverine Moments

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE opens July 26
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE marks the long-awaited MCU crossover that has been teased for over a decade, exciting old audiences and stirring up interest in younger ones. For some, this will be the first opportunity to see Wolverine in action on the big screen since LOGAN was released in theatres seven years ago. Look back at some of Logan’s most epic moments from the X-Men and Wolverine franchises while you gear up for the new film.
With over a decade of films to choose from, it’s difficult to pinpoint just three moments that showcase how awesome Wolverine is, but 2006’s X-MEN: THE LAST STAND does a pretty good job of highlighting it during the second half.
Distressed at the thought of losing Jean to the Dark Phoenix who has replaced her, Logan does whatever it takes to break through Magneto’s line of defense and find out what they’re planning. This begins with an ambush in the forest, fronted by a mutant with the ability to produce and throw sharp, spiraling horns. Immediately, Logan is hit in the arm and flees on foot. After successfully hiding, he harnesses the Wolverine’s powers to pull the horn from his shoulder and hurl it back at his attacker.
After taking down multiple other mutants, Wolverine uses his blades to block the spikes being thrown at him and put an end to the onslaught. If you’ve seen X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, then you know this is just the beginning of one of Logan’s most intense battles yet, but we won’t include any major spoilers here.
In THE WOLVERINE (2013), Logan goes international to Tokyo, Japan in order to meet up with an old friend from the war . Upon his death, Logan finds himself entangled in a fight between a group of Japanese gangsters known as the Yakuza and his friend’s granddaughter, Mariko. After they narrowly avoid assassination attempts throughout the city, the two hop on a bullet train where they hope to find a moment of reprieve. Unfortunately, the Logan is badly wounded and not healing as quickly as usual.
When Logan leaves the restroom and comes face to face with the Yakuza, he is alone. Despite their lack of superpowers, the gangsters are well adept at using guns and swords. Wolverine unsheathes his claws to slice open the side of the train car and throw the bad guys out, but he’s caught off guard when one of the assassins grabs him as he’s being ejected.
The battle continues as Wolverine digs into the metal of the train car, holding on until he must let go to avoid being hit by a pole. When he lands on top of the bullet train, he sees his opponent is using a similar trick with a sword. We’re not really sure about the physics of the rest of this fight concerning all the flips and jumps over various obstacles while speeding through the city at over 100 miles per hour, but it sure does look cool.
One of the most jaw-dropping moments in the Wolverine franchise takes place half-way 2017’s LOGAN. Earlier we’re alerted to the experimental program that “The Kid” Laura came from. One of the nurses left a video describing a new weapon that is more powerful than the children they created, something known only as X-24.
What makes X-24’s appearance so shocking is that he looks identical to Wolverine physically. The first moment the audience is introduced to the soulless mutant, it appears as if Logan himself has killed Charles Xavier with his blades. It’s soon revealed that the real Logan is outside and upon hearing the commotion, he rushes inside to meet his match. Literally.
It isn’t until after Logan has assured Charles that he wasn’t the one to harm him that he runs after his double to take care of business. Wolverine attacks X-24 with a newly ignited rage we only rarely glimpse of this character when he loses something he loves the most. Still, X-24 was designed to be stronger than Wolverine, even without the additional advantage of being completely remorseless. The action only ends after X-24 is rammed by a truck and shot repeatedly in the head, something Wolverine may not be able to take credit for but can certainly be grateful for as he’s finally able to get a hold of Laura and make an escape. Of course, this isn't the last they'll see of one another, but you'll have to watch LOGAN to wrap that chapter up.
We can only vaguely guess what DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE has in store for audiences, but the trailer did confirm that once the two anti-heroes do finally cross paths and team up against the bad guys, the Time Variance Authority gets involved and scrambles up the whole cinematic universe. Don’t worry if you haven’t learned the ins and outs of the TVA from Loki – once you see it, you’ll get it.
