Meet The Voices Behind Paws Of Fury

It isn’t every day when a timeless, and raucous, comedy like BLAZING SADDLES goes on to inspire an animated feature film nearly 50 years after the fact, but that’s the world we live in. Loosely based on Mel Brooks’ 1974 meta comedy western, the family-friendly martial arts comedy, PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK, will be released in AMC Theatres nationwide in July.
But before you run to the ticket counter and jump in line for one of the most promising family films coming to movie houses in Summer 2022, you should get to know some of the main characters and the famous actors, comedians, and celebrities who bring those fearsome cats and dogs to life. And while we won’t go over every famous name set to appear in the movie, we’ve got enough to get you started on this wild and crazy journey.
Michael Cera as Hank
Leading off the PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK cast is Michael Cera, who provides the voice of the movie’s titular beagle who dreams of one day becoming the samurai. Although mostly remembered for performances in comedy shows and movies like “Arrested Development” and SUPERBAD, Cera has a great deal of experience in the voice-acting world, having appeared in a number of different animated projects throughout his career.
The first movie that comes to mind when thinking about Cera’s voice-work is surely THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE, in which the comedic-actor portrayed Richard “Dick” Grayson, aka Robin, a role he would also reprise in the short film COOKING WITH ALFRED. Cera has also appeared in animated films like SAUSAGE PARTY and CRYPTOZOO.
Throughout his career, Cera has also provided his voice for shows including “Braceface,” “The Berenstain Bears,” “Childrens Hospital,” and “The Simpsons.”
Samuel L. Jackson as Jimbo
Next up in this roundup of the PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK voice cast is Samuel L. Jackson, who portrays the reluctant sensei known as Jimbo. Not only does Jackson have one of the most instantly recognizable faces in Hollywood, he also has one of the most iconic voices. In addition to appearing in movies like PULP FICTION, JURASSIC PARK, DJANGO UNCHAINED, and multiple titles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jackson has also shown up in several animated features throughout his career. This includes everything from THE INCREDIBLES and its sequel to STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS and ASTRO BOY to TURBO, and so several others of note.
Jackson has also lent his voice to shows like “The Boondocks,” “Afro Samurai,” “Black Dynamite,” and “What If…?” to name just a few.
Ricky Gervais as Ika Chu
Stepping in as Ika Chu, the villainous cat bringing destruction and disorder to PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK, is Ricky Gervais.
Well known for creating the original U.K. version of “The Office,” his role in the Night at the Museum franchise, and hosting duties at various Golden Globes® Awards shows, Gervais is quite experienced when it comes to appearing in animated film and TV projects.
Throughout his career, Gervais has appeared in animated feature films like VALIANT, SKY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD, ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH, THE LITTLE PRINCE, and SAVE RALPH. Add some appearances on “The Simpsons,” “BoJack Horseman,” and “Family Guy,” and you have yourself quite a list of memorable voice credits.
George Takei as Ohga
Next up is George Takei, who appears on the PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK voice cast as Ohga, who leads Ika Chu’s army in his quest for feline domination.
To moviegoers of a certain era, Takei will always be remembered for his portrayal of the U.S.S. Enterprise helmsman Hikaru Sulu in the “Star Trek” TV series as well as subsequent films, animated series, and other specials in the science-fiction universe. Outside of his Star Trek projects, Takei has appeared in animated films like MULAN and its straight-to-video sequel, FUTURAMA: BENDER’S GAME, FREE BIRDS, and KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, to name a few.
Takei’s other voice-over work includes TV shows like “Spider-Man: The Animated Series,” “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” “Transformers: Prime,” and countless others.
Michelle Yeoh as Yuki
Taking on the role of the fearless cat Yuki in PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK is none other than Michelle Yeoh, who has been on a tear as of late with action-packed movies like SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS and EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE.
An acclaimed martial artist and actress, Yeoh has appeared in movies like CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, POLICE STORY 3, GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE, and CRAZY RICH ASIANS throughout her career. On top of that, she’s lent her voice to titles like KUNG FU PANDA 2 and the 2022 summer movie MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU. And she is on the voice cast of the upcoming video game adaptation series “Ark: The Animated Series.”
Yeoh is also set to appear in AVATAR 2 in December 2022.
Gabriel Iglesias as Chuck
Rounding out the main portion of the PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK voice cast is Gabriel Iglesias, who provides the voice of the cat named Chuck.
Although mostly known for his stand-up comedy specials and appearances on various TV shows, Iglesias is a major force in the voice-acting world, having appeared in some of the biggest animated movies of the past decade. Over the years, Iglesias has lent his voice to movies like PLANES, THE NUT JOB, COCO, FERDINAND, SHOW DOGS, and SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY.
Iglesias also has several TV voice-acting credits to his name, including “Monsters at Work,” “Maya and the Three,” “Ice Age: The Great Egg-Scapade,” and “The Emperor's New School,” MONSTERS AT WORK, MAYA AND THE THREE, ICE AGE: THE GREAT EGG-SCAPADE, and THE EMPEROR’S NEW SCHOOL, to name only a few.
This is just a small portion of the voices you’ll hear when PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK opens in AMC Theatres nationwide this July.
