Peppermint is a new take on the vigilante story, and a return to form for Jennifer Garner. The star plays Riley North, who suffers an unimaginable trauma when her husband and daughter are killed in a drive-by shooting. (On her daughter’s birthday, no less.) An indifferent justice system lets the killers walk free, so Riley gets revenge by taking the law into her own hands.
Before the film, directed by Pierre Morel (Taken), hits theaters on September 7, let’s get acquainted with the cast.
Jennifer Garner has become known as a star of comedies and romantic films, but she started off in a very different mode. After a supporting role in Pearl Harbor, Garner starred in five seasons of the action/espionage television series Alias. That show led to a role as Marvel’s Elektra long before the formation of the MCU, in Daredevil and its spin-off Elektra. She has also starred in 13 Going On 30 and Dallas Buyers Club, and was most recently seen in Love, Simon.
John Gallagher Jr.
John Gallagher Jr.’s character, Carmichael, is a homicide detective charged with tracking down Riley. Like many other fictional detectives, Carmichael is troubled. When we meet him he has let his morals slide. Gallagher is much more upstanding. He started his career on Broadway and originated the role of Moritz Stiefel in Spring Awakening. That earned him a Tony Award. He subsequently appeared in other Broadway shows including American Idiot, Jerusalem, and Long Days Journey into Night, before transitioning into film and television. On TV, his biggest role to date is on the HBO series Olive Kitteridge. He’s played notable supporting roles in films such as 10 Cloverfield Lane, Short Term 12, and The Belko Experiment.
The reliable character actor John Ortiz plays Moises, another detective on Riley’s case. Fast & Furious fans know Ortiz as Braga, from the fourth film in the series, while hardcore TV viewers will remember him from Togetherness and HBO’s short-lived series Luck. He also appeared in Alien Vs Predator: Requiem, Carlito’s Way, Silver Linings Playbook, and, more recently, Kong: Skull Island and The Cloverfield Paradox.
Annie Ilonzeh co-stars as Lisa Inman, an FBI agent involved in the hunt for Riley North. Ilonzeh has been a fixture on TV for years, having appeared on Empire, Arrow, Beauty and The Beast and American Horror Story: Cult. She also played one of the primary roles in the short-lived Charlie’s Angels TV reboot. In the world of film, Ilonzeh is perhaps best known for her role in the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me.
Tyson Ritter plays “Homeless Sam,” which suggests that Sam will be a contact of some sort for Riley as she wages her war on the streets. Ritter was originally known as the frontman of alternative rock band The All-American Rejects. He is also, however, an accomplished actor, having appeared in multiple films including Miss You Already and The Sweet Life. He also had a recurring role on TV series Parenthood and currently plays two somewhat blasphemous roles on AMC series Preacher.
The young Cailey Fleming plays Riley’s daughter Carly, who is killed early on in the film during a drive-by shooting. Despite her early exit from the story, Carly is constantly in Riley’s mind, and we expect to see flashbacks featuring her throughout the movie. Before Peppermint, Fleming had a recurring role on TV series Better Things, and she also made an appearance on AMC’s Preacher. She also had a pretty cool minor role as the young version of Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Peppermint hits theaters September 7, 2018.
