On March 17th, audiences will get to experience the newest installment from the DC Extended Universe, SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS. In the upcoming sequel, Philadelphia's favorite son faces off against a new threat, the Greek goddesses - the Daughters of Atlas. Director David Sandberg and writers, Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan are on board to pen a script that is true to the 2019 origin story with perfectly timed comedy and incredible, action sequences.
Similar to SHAZAM!, the moments between Billy Batson and trusted sidekick Freddy Freeman, are the heartbeat of the film. The comedic power-duo try their best to provide a safe haven for the citizens of Philadelphia, but being that they are teenage boys, they create as much chaos as they do protection, thus garnering the name - The Philly Fiascos. In an exclusive interview with us, Zachary Levi shares that keeping the tone was the most important aspect for the sequel.
“I think David understood that. Peter Safran understood that. Henry Gayden our writer, everyone in the cast understood that what makes Shazam special and different, is its heart, charm and humor.”
SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS picks up shortly after the original film, with Billy attempting to be the leader of the Shazamilly while keeping an eye on Freddy. With his newfound powers, Freddy pulls away from the family and becomes more reckless as Captain Every Power, in his attempt to create his own name and get out of the shadows of Shazam. In our interview with the cast, Jack Dylan Grazer shared his gratitude and enthusiasm with the script of the sequel.
“Because at the end of the day, I am the better character. So I thought that was a really refreshing, that will help people really like the movie more.”
Of course Grazer admitted he was just kidding, but shared his appreciation for the opportunity to approach the film like a new movie with his favorite character Freddy having the chance to experience a new emotional arc in the movie. Watch our spoiler-free interview with the Jack Dylan Grazer, Zachary Levi with Asher Angel and director, David Sanderg:
Joining the existing cast members, Dame Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler play the Daughters of Atlas. The goddesses Hespera, Kalypso and Athena pose a serious threat to humanity, wielding unbelievable, magical powers and, did we mention a dragon that could alter Earth as we know it. Billy will face a much larger challenge than Dr. Sivana posed in SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS, unless he can unite the Shazamily and prove that he is The Champion.
With Peter Safran serving as producer on both SHAZAM! and SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS and now partnering with James Gunn as co-chairperson and CEO of DC Studios in the development of the new DCEU, we had to ask Zachary Levi about the future of his character, Shazam:
“I am grateful for this opportunity… the fact that we did (get a sequel), it’s just awesome. So if I get to do it again, whatever, I don't know, tell me where to go. Be a cameo there. Do a team-up there. I would love to do a team-up movie!”
Be sure to catch all the laughs and action when SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS opens March 17th at your favorite AMC theatre.
