We’ve seen Gerard Butler rescue the United States president from global catastrophes in Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen. Now, the actor is embarking on a quest to rescue the Russian president from a rogue Defense minister in Hunter Killer, opening on October 26. The film, an adaptation of George Wallace and Don Keith’s novel Firing Point, focuses on Joe Glass (Butler), a submarine captain who’s tasked with saving President Zakarin from a coup orchestrated by one of his ministers.
Aided by the Pentagon and a team of skilled Navy SEALs, Glass puts his life on the line to retrieve the Russian leader and prevent World War III. Hunter Killer features an impressive cast to tell this story — let’s meet the actors.
Gerard Butler plays Captain Joe Glass. Once a law student, Butler ultimately pursued an acting career. Following small appearances in Mrs. Brown and Tomorrow Never Dies, he landed his first leading role in Dracula 2000, a contemporary reimagining of Bram Stoker’s classic story.
He went on to be featured in films like Reign Of Fire, Timeline and Tomb Raider – The Cradle Of Life, before jumping into the spotlight playing the haunting lead in The Phantom Of The Opera, opposite Emmy Rossum. Some of Butler’s greatest mainstream success came from playing hardened Secret Service agent Mike Banning in the Olympus Has Fallen franchise. His next projects are How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Angel Has Fallen.
Gary Oldman plays Admiral Charles Donnegan, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. Oldman needs no introduction. He’s known for full transformations on screen, whether as Sid Vicious in Sid And Nancy, Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK, or Dracula in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Oldman made his directorial debut in 1997’s Nil By Mouth, which explored the daily struggles of a working-class family living in London. Years later, he became a household name playing Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series, and Jim Gordon in the Dark Knight trilogy. In 2017, he was honored with an Academy Award for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. The actor can next be seen in The Woman In The Window and Netflix’s The Laundromat.
Common plays John Fisk, a Rear Admiral working in the Pentagon. Fisk plays a pivotal role in the fight against Dimitri Durov. Common is a versatile entertainer who’s found success as both a rapper and as an actor. He began to gain recognition through supporting roles in Terminator Salvation and Date Night, before moving on to bigger parts in movies like Just Wright, LUV and Now You See Me.
He also appeared in numerous television series, most prominently Hell On Wheels, in which he played slave-turned-security assistant Elam Ferguson. On the big screen, we’ve loved Common in Barbershop: The Next Cut, John Wick: Chapter 2, Megan Leavy, and The Hate U Give. Audiences can next see him in John Wick: Parabellum, opening on May 17, 2019.
Linda Cardellini plays Jayne Norquist, a senior NSA analyst who works with Fisk to aid in the rescue of the Russian president. Cardellini’s career began on television with roles in Clueless, Kenan & Kel, The Lot, and Boy Meets World. Her breakout role was Lindsay Weir on Freaks And Geeks. She made her feature film debut in 1997’s Good Burger, and played Velma Dinkley in Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.
Marvel fans will recognize Cardellini as Hawkeye’s wife, Laura Barton, in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Cardellini has had strong television roles in the last few years, appearing in Mad Men and New Girl and starring in Netflix’s Bloodline, as well as lending her voice to Regular Show and Gravity Falls. She can next be seen in The Curse of La Llorona, opening on April 19, 2019, and Fonzo, opposite Tom Hardy.
Russian president Zakarin is played by Alexander Diachenko. He rose to prominence as an actor in Russia, appearing in various TV shows and films including Brother 2, One For All, Wolfhound, The Star, and White Gold. He later had small roles in 2005’s The Second Front and BBC One’s McMafia, which follows the son of a Russian crime boss who finds himself at odds with the Russian mob. Hunter Killer marks Diachenko’s first role in a major Hollywood production, and we’re excited for what he’ll bring to the film.
Michael Nyqvist portrays Captain Sergei Andropov, who begrudgingly helps Glass prevent World War III. Nyqvist began his acting career in Sweden, gaining popularity for his performances in Beck, Together and the Academy Award-nominated As It Is In Heaven. Nyqvist later gained widespread recognition playing journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the Swedish adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and its two sequels.
Hollywood came calling, and Nyqvist appeared in the 2011 action-thriller Abduction, after which he went on to be featured in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and John Wick. Nyqvist sadly passed away in 2017. His last films after Hunter Killer are Radegun, a historical drama focused on August Diehl, an Austrian conscientious objector living in World War II, and Kursk, based on the 2000 Kursk submarine disaster.
Toby Stephens plays Lieutenant Bill Beaman, the leader of the Navy SeAL team that assists Glass with the rescue of President Zakarin. Stephens is the son of legendary actors Maggie Smith and the late Robert Stephens. His big-screen career started with roles in Orlando and Photographing Fairies. In 2002, he received worldwide exposure after starring as the treacherous Gustav Graves in Die Another Day.
On television, he appeared in shows like Jane Eyre, Robin Hood and Law & Order: UK, before getting his big break starring as Captain James Flint in Starz’s Black Sails. He played the character for the show’s four seasons and later went on to star in Netflix’s Lost In Space reboot as Ex-Marine John Robinson.
Mikhail Gorevoy plays Dimitri Durov, a Russian Defense Minister who stages a coup. He kidnaps the Russian president, setting off a chain of events that could lead to a global catastrophe. Gorevoy has enjoyed a prolific career as an actor in Russia, having appeared in movies like Mirror Wars: Reflection One, Law of Corruption and The House Of The Sun, and TV series such as Ekaterina, Messing and Murphy’s Law. In the United States, he’s been featured in minor roles in Die Another Day, Bridge of Spies (above), and The Hitman’s Bodyguard.
