The Madame Web Trailer Is Mind-Bending And Action-Packed

December 1st, 2023The Madame Web Trailer Is Mind-Bending And Action-Packed

MADAME WEB opens February 14

Outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe exists another interconnected movie franchise distributed by Sony in which some of the most famous supporting characters in Spider-Man’s tangled web get their share of the spotlight. Of course, most of these films – such as VENOM and its sequel, MORBIUS, and the upcoming KRAVEN THE HUNTER – have primarily focused on the people who have made enemies with Peter Parker in the comics, but that will soon change. For the first time, one of the webslinger’s most trusted, unique, and wisest allies is getting her own movie with the highly anticipated MADAME WEB.

Directed by S.J. Clarkson – who previously helmed Marvel TV shows like “Jessica Jones” – the comic book film, which is swinging into AMC Theatres on February 14, 2024, stars Dakota Johnson in the title role, but for now, is only known by her given name: Cassandra Webb. Those unfamiliar with the character may be wondering what happens that causes her to become a Marvel hero, if she is going to share the screen with Spider-Man anytime soon, and what exactly her upcoming movie is about. Answers to most of those questions are provided in the first official trailer for MADAME WEB, which we have some thoughts about. First, check out the clip for yourself:

Cassandra’s Psychic Powers

The MADAME WEB trailer wastes absolutely no time throwing us right into the action by starting off with a first-hand glimpse into Cassandra Webb’s clairvoyant abilities with that introductory fight sequence at a roadside diner. We then discover the Manhattan paramedic, somehow, acquired this gift after suffering a near-death experience, which seems to have a few blink-and-you-miss-it clues of her eventual kinship with Spider-Man, but that’s just a theory.

The teaser traces her struggle to learn how to manage these powers, which start off as spontaneous visions out of her control, as demonstrated by tragic moment when she sees a man’s death before it happens and, in a humorous moment, cannot predict when Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor) tests her skills by throwing a rock at her. A comic book movie about clairvoyance is already an intriguing concept, but the ways the ability is presented in the MADAME WEB trailer suggests they will ensure a visually stunning experience in the final product.

Four Spider-Women Team Up

Cassandra’s abilities turn out to be what causes her to cross paths with her three companions – Julia Carpenter (Sydney Sweeney), the aforementioned Mattie Franklin, and Anya Corozon (Isabela Merced). After witnessing a vision of their demise at the hands of a villain we touch on later, she asserts herself into their lives as their devoted protector before learning the foursome is also connected in other ways.

The trailer also teases that these characters are destined to be Marvel heroes with powers similar to Spider-Man. We see a brief glimpse of Julia – who is the comics’ current Madame Web – dressed as Arachne; Mattie in a multi-legged suit as Spider-Woman; and Anya in her Spider-Girl outfit. It is unclear if they are officially going to debut as their alter egos in MADAME WEB or if these are just visions of what they may become in subsequent films, but it serves as an exciting tease nonetheless.

A Powerful Enemy

In a reveal from the MADAME WEB trailer that many fans have pointed out seems to reference the plot of 1984’s THE TERMINATOR, these women are being hunted by a powerful, deadly man named Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim). The villain casts a bleak shadow over the teaser with his initially-mysterious intent against the protagonists and costume that looks like he raided Peter Parker’s wardrobe and redesigned it to resemble his own inner darkness. Of course, this guy is no Spider-Man and is actually after Julia, Mattie, and Anya because he, apparently, has clairvoyant abilities of his own and believes these Spider-Women pose a threat.

Furthermore, Sims is revealed to have a personal connection to Cassandra. As she explains in a voiceover, he was in the Amazon with her mother when she was researching spiders right before she died. Could this mean he was somehow involved with her death? What else could his own apparent fascination with spiders also be hinting at? One thing is for sure – this is a villain who is shrouded with mystery that we cannot wait to see resolved.

Overall, the MADAME WEB trailer has successfully gotten us hyped with anticipation and speculation. See just how mind-bending and action-packed the movie itself is and how it answers the questions we have posited above when the film is released in an AMC Theatres location near you!
