JOY RIDE opens July 7th
Raunchy R-rated comedies have been around for about as long as anyone can remember, but for the most part, it has been teenage boys or young men at the center of these raucous stories. But, that will soon change with the release of Adele Lim’s JOY RIDE, a new comedy about a group of friends who go on a journey across China to find the birth-mother of one woman in their party.
The movie will roll into AMC Theatres locations nationwide later this summer, but while we wait, now seems like the best possible time to get to know the JOY RIDE cast, go over the characters they will soon be playing, and touch on their respective careers and how they got to the point where they are in the movie that screenwriter Cherry Chevapravatdumrong said was “the definition of rocking the boat, rocking the train, rocking the plane” at CinemaCon 2023.
Let’s meet the four actresses who lead the JOY RIDE cast…
JOY RIDE centers on Audrey, a young woman adopted at birth who goes on an odyssey through mainland China to find and meet her biological mother, who gave her up several decades ago.
If Park looks familiar, then chances are it’s from her portrayal of Mindy Chen on the Netflix comedy series “Emily in Paris,” but this is just one part of her career on TV, in film, and on Broadway. Over the years, Park has appeared on shows like “Nightcap,” “Girls5eva” and most recently, “Beef.” This is on top of appearances in movies like ARE YOU JOKING? and MR. MALCOLM’S LIST. Her stage credits include musicals like “Mamma Mia,” “Mean Girls,” “The King and I,” “Grand Horizons” and multiple off-Broadway performances.
Sherry Cola shows up in JOY RIDE as Lolo, Audrey’s fiercely loyal friend who has a very “body-positive” form of self-expression with her art but maybe hasn’t made the best decisions in her adult life.
If you were a big fan of Pixar’s 2022 animated comedy, TURNING RED, then you’ll probably recognize Cola’s voice, as she portrayed one of Mei’s aunts. Prior to that, Cola landed roles in movies like MUSIC and ENDINGS, BEGINNINGS. Later this summer, she’ll play a major role in SHORTCOMINGS, Randall Park’s adaptation of Adrian Tomine’s graphic novel of the same name. Cola has also appeared on a list of shows that includes “Transparent,” “Claws” and “Good Trouble,” to name a few.
Coming off a year in which she not only had a breakthrough performance in the Academy Award-winning EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, one that also earned her an Oscar® nomination and multiple other accolades, Stephanie Hsu serves as one of the co-leads of JOY RIDE as Audrey’s friend and Chinese soap opera star, Kat.
When speaking about JOY RIDE at CinemaCon 2023, Hsu called the film an “Rated-R debaucherous fun movie,” and over the course of the past few years, she has become one of the brightest up-and-coming stars in young Hollywood. This is thanks in part to her dual performance in the aforementioned EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, but also movies like SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS, and SET IT UP.
Hsu, who found success on the small screen with appearances on everything from “Girl Code” to “The Path,” and “Poker Face” to “Awkwafina is Nora From Queens,” had a major role on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” starting with the show’s third season. Though that series wrapped up in Spring 2023, Hsu has quite a lot on her plate moving forwards, including the aforementioned SHORTCOMINGS and David Letich’s THE FALL GUY starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.
Last, but certainly not least, is Sabrina Wu, who appears in JOY RIDE as Deadeye, Lolo’s eccentric cousin who comes along for what certainly appears to be a wild and debaucherous ride.
Though they are just now making their feature film acting debut in Adele Lim’s summer 2023 comedy, Wu is no stranger when it comes to entertaining an audience. In addition to serving as a staff writer on the Disney+ original series, “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.,” Wu has done everything from working as an intern on “The Daily Show,” to performing stand-up on stages across the country, including “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in 2022. Along with the rest of the JOY RIDE cast, Wu was awarded the CinemaCon 2023 Comedy Ensemble of the Year award, per Deadline.
Well, now that you know the names and faces of the JOY RIDE cast, all there is left to do is check out the movie for yourself when it opens at AMC Theatres locations nationwide starting July 7.
