The Tiniest Hero Is Back On The Big Screen

February 16th, 2023The Tiniest Hero Is Back On The Big Screen

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA opens February 17th

Over the course of the past decade, Scott Lang has transformed himself from petty thief and struggling father working at a Baskin Robbins into one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and the tiniest one at that. In his first two solo outings, as well as multiple crossover event films like CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and AVENGERS: ENDGAME, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man has had quite a journey through multiple realms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is preparing for what could be his toughest, and strangest yet.

Before ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA brings its titular hero back into the fold, let’s break down how Scott Lang got to this point in his Marvel journey, what dangers await in the Quantum Realm, as well as how to enter AMC Theatre’s upcoming sweepstakes that will send one lucky winner and a guest to Los Angeles to attend the premiere of either GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 or THE MARVELS.

Launching Phase 5 Of The MCU

What once seemed like a far-off promise is becoming a reality now that ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA is launching Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the next chapter in the incredibly popular superhero saga. Between now and Summer 2024, comic book movie fans around the world will be treated to a new series of adventures told in movies like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3, THE MARVELS, CAPTAIN AMERICA: NEW WORLD ORDER, and THUNDERBOLTS.

Who knows what the MCU has in store for us in the next year, but one thing that is for certain is that all roads lead to Phase 6, which will feature not one, but two massive crossover films – AVENGERS: THE KANG DYNASTY and AVENGERS: SECRET WARS – which will surely include ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA big bad, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), in some shape or form.

We had the opportunity to sit down with the visionary director, Peyton Reed to discuss Scott Lang’s MCU history, his relationship with his daughter Cassie and the future of our favorite tiny Avenger.

Ant-Man’s Journey In The MCU

Few characters in the MCU have had a hero’s journey quite as unlikely as Scott Lang. In the span of a few years, he went from convicted felon trying to get a new start in life and form a meaningful relationship with his daughter, to bringing back the billions of lives lost by Thanos’ snap before saving the universe once again when an alternate version of the Mad Titan descended upon Earth with a massive army.

It all started when Lang broke into a seemingly random house and stole what turned out to be Hank Pym’s (Michael Douglas) Ant-Man suit, and upon putting it on for the first time, shrank to the size of an ant. Throughout 2015’s ANT-MAN, Lang learned to use the suit’s more impressive capabilities, which allowed him to survive being stuck in the Quantum Realm the first time.

Lang’s heroics, and breaking into the Avengers’ headquarters, put him on the radar of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who recruited the hero for the epic showdown in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, which resulted in house arrest and a fascination with magic.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP saw Lang team up with Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) once more. The budding relationship took a strange turn when Hope’s mother, Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), who had been trapped in the Quantum Realm for decades, channeled Lang and communicated with her husband and daughter to escape. The reunion, however, was short-lived due to the aforementioned snap.

When we last saw Lang, he escaped the Quantum Realm and helped what was left of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes pull off a “time heist” in AVENGERS: ENDGAME, which was ultimately successful despite some major casualties, like Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.).

A Return to the Quantum Realm

When ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA continues Lang’s hero’s journey, he is no longer the unknown former thief but instead one of the most well-known superheroes on the planet, thanks in part to his actions during the massive battle with Thanos. But, the victory lap doesn’t last long, as Lang, together with his daughter, Cassie (Kathryn Newton), Hope van Dyne, Janet van Dyne, and Hank Pym, are transported back to Quantum Realm.

Exploring the vast realm, the group meets Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), a time-traveling figure who could very well prove to be the biggest threat to life in the MCU to date. All sorts of dangers and mysteries await in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA.
