By the time the fall season ends and winter comes around, the nation’s winged creatures make way for a warmer climate. That natural pattern loosely serves as the basis of Illumination Entertainment’s next animated big screen adventure, MIGRATION.
The family-friendly film – which opens on December 22 – tells a story in the tradition of road trip comedies, but the family in search of a break from their homelife at a serene, new destination is a group of ducks. Before the film migrates into AMC Theatres, let’s take a look at who appears in the star-studded MIGRATION voice cast.
As Pam – the thrill-seeking matriarch of the central family of ducks in MIGRATION – we have Elizabeth Banks, who previously lent her voice to the role of Wildstyle in THE LEGO MOVIE and its 2019 sequel. Audiences should recognize the actor’s face from the HUNGER GAMES series, the PITCH PERFECT franchise (which she also produced), and other blockbusters, as well as indie comedies like WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER. Also in 2023, Banks released her third directorial effort with COCAINE BEAR.
The overprotective father of the flock, Mack, is played by Kumail Nanjiani, who previously lent his voice to THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE in 2017. That same year, the comic and “Silicon Valley” cast member released the semi-autobiographical dramedy, THE BIG SICK, which earned him and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay. Nanjiani has since joined the MCU as part of the ETERNALS cast and received Emmy nominations for his performances in the recent “Twilight Zone” reboot and Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendale’s.”
Pigeon gang leader Chump is actually the second bird that Awkwafina has voiced in 2023 alone, after playing Scuttle in THE LITTLE MERMAID. Chump is also the latest of many animated animals she has played – such as a Quail in STORKS and a tarantula in 2022’s THE BAD GUYS. The musician and comedian’s most notable live-action credits include CRAZY RICH ASIANS, THE FAREWELL (which earned her a Golden Globe win), and the Comedy Central series, “Awkwafina is Nora from Queens,” which she also co-created. She also joined the MCU in 2021 when she starred in SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS.
With his ability to pull off various voices, Keegan-Michael Key – who plays a Jamaican parrot domesticated in a Manhattan restaurant – has played many animated roles already. Also in 2023, he was Toad in THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE. He previously starred alongside Banks in THE LEGO MOVIE as Foreman Jim, and alongside his sketch comedy partner, Jordan Peele, as Ducky in TOY STORY 4. Highlights of the comedian’s live-action big screen career include 2018’s THE PREDATOR and the action-comedy, KEANU.
As a duck farm leader who likes yoga, we have David Mitchell, whose most notable voice acting roles have been on TV shows like “Rick and Morty.” Many of the British comedian’s most notable live-action roles also come from the small screen – such as the two-time BAFTA-winning performance on “Peep Show.” However, you might have seen him on the big screen in the 2017 action-comedy GUN SHY or 2019’s GREED, opposite Steve Coogan.
Lending her distinct voice to MIGRATION as Erin the Heron is Carol Kane. Like Mitchell, much of her previous animated roles have been on TV and include Fox originals The Simpsons and Family Guy as well as Netflix’s Big Mouth. She is better known, however, for her Academy Award nominated performance in the 1975 drama, HESTER STREET, and her hilarious turns in 1987’s THE PRINCESS BRIDE and Barry Sonnenfeld’s THE ADDAMS FAMILY movies as Granny.
Pam and Mack’s teenage son, Dax, is played by Caspar Jennings, who has only five acting credits to his name so far, including MIGRATION. Most of his roles so far actually have been Illumination projects, including his debut as Piglet in 2016’s SING. He made his live-action debut in Netflix’s 2021 historical drama, OPERATION MINCEMEAT.
The role of Dax’s younger sister, Gwen, marks the acting debut of Tresi Gazal. Her live-action debut in the drama BILLY KNIGHT is right around the corner, set to open in January 2024.
Last, but most definitely not least – playing Mack’s cantankerous uncle, Dan — is Danny DeVito, whose many iconic previous voice acting roles include Swackhammer in SPACE JAM, Phil in Disney’s HERCULES, and the title character of THE LORAX. The actor has an Oscar nomination for ERIN BROKOVICH, an Emmy for starring on “Taxi”, and has also helmed classics like THE WAR OF THE ROSES and MATILDA. The “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star can do it all, which is why his presence in any project is always greeted with a warm welcome.
