In November 2017, Taika Waititi came in like a breath of fresh air and completely reinvented the THOR film franchise with his stylish, hilarious, and action-packed Marvel debut THOR: RAGNAROK. The movie, which was a major departure from the first two solo movies featuring Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder, was a major success in the eyes of audiences and critics alike with its gripping story and stunning visuals. And no surprise here, but the pairing of Waititi and Hemsworth once again provides for thrills, chills, and loads of humor and heart with their second feature-length film together, THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER.

The fourth THOR movie is a thrilling, emotional, and incredibly fun ride that features loads of heart-stopping action, some of the MCU’s best and best-timed humor, and a shocking amount of emotion that is up there with some of the franchise’s most touching moments yet. Here is our spoiler-free reaction to THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER, opening in AMC Theatres on July 8.

Thor: Love And Thunder Has Incredible Action

It should come as a surprise to absolutely no one, but THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER has an incredible amount of action from the very beginning of the movie all the way until the credits begin to roll — and even then there are the two end credits sequences. Whether it is watching Thor in battle alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy to fight off an deceptively cut enemy before they destroy a massive yet fragile religious landmark, jumping into a nighttime skirmish in New Asgard, or taking the fight to Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, the movie doesn’t disappoint.

And it isn’t just Thor who gets his hands a little dirty in combat, as Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, with her new Mighty Thor persona, proves time and time again throughout THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER that she shouldn’t be taken lightly. This is especially true when she pulls some new tricks that even make Thor sit back in awe. King Valkyrie, once again played by Tessa Thompson, proves she is more than just the king of New Asgard by throwing herself in the middle of the action in some of the movie’s most visually-impressive battle sequences.

Taika Waititi’s Unique Humor Is On Full Display

Moviegoers who loved Taika Waititi’s unique sense of humor in THOR: RAGNAROK will feel right at home with the Academy Award® winner’s latest superhero movie. Taking the comedy from his first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and doubling-down on it, Waititi has crafted another raucous and hilarious action spectacle that is full of laughs from start to finish. This works especially well following some of the movie’s more emotional moments and provides a great deal of levity.

Without giving too much away, fans of Waititi’s Korg who wanted more of the character will be happy to hear that the Kronan warrior and former contestant in the Grandmaster’s Contest of Champions is front and center throughout much of THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER and he steals the show whenever he’s around.

Honestly, at times it was difficult keeping up with the laughs throughout THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER because the jokes – both big and small – were delivered left and right in quick succession. But don’t let this make it seem as if the jokes are distracting, for they serve their purpose and give everyone time to shine, even Gorr the God Butcher.

Thor: Love And Thunder Is Incredibly Emotional

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER is full of impressive action and side-splitting humor throughout, but it also contains a great deal of emotion, so much so that it is arguably one of the most emotional titles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. From Gorr the God Butcher’s tragic backstory to shocking and upsettingly tender revelations, the movie doesn’t hold back with its more tender moments.

In regards to Gorr the God Butcher, his incredibly sorrowful backstory serves as the spark for his centuries-long quest to cleanse the universe of deities and puts him at the top tier of MCU villains alongside the likes of Thanos in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and Killmonger in BLACK PANTHER. It also doesn’t hurt that Christian Bale, who is one of the greatest actors of the past few decades, doesn’t hold back one bit in his portrayal of the tortured and broken-hearted antagonist.

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER is a thrilling and emotional ride that finds a tremendous balance thanks to director Taika Waititi and the large ensemble cast’s ability to craft and pull off heart-stopping action, side-splitting humor, and heart-breaking moments. All of this is to say the latest Marvel movie and you have a superhero film we won’t soon forget.
