Would the Russos Make More Marvel Movies?
Ask a director days after they delivered a massive blockbuster if they want to do another one, and their gut reaction probably will be to say, “Nope.”
Eventually, though, they do come back. Christopher McQuarrie agreed to helm a new MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie, and J.J. Abrams got lured back to STAR WARS. And yes, when AMC sat down with AVENGERS: ENDGAME co-director Anthony Russo, he was clear about his future with Marvel, even though he didn’t have concrete details.
“That's entirely possible,” Anthony Russo said of a potential reunion between him, his brother, Joe, and the creative partners at Marvel Studios. “We adore Kevin [Feige]. He has arguably been one of our greatest collaborators in our entire careers. He’s an amazing partner. So yeah, we hope to work with Kevin again. Hopefully many times. But, I mean, who knows, at this point? I will say this. We have no specifics about what we would do with them.”
Joe and Anthony Russo have worked almost exclusively on Marvel Studios films for the past few years. Their run began with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, and they stayed extremely busy with CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and the massive AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.
The new AVENGERS: ENDGAME concludes the story that started in last year’s INFINITY WAR, pitting the surviving Avengers against the global threat of Thanos (Josh Brolin). But it also serves as a conclusion to the previous 21 MCU films, which collectively will now be known as the Infinity Saga.
But moving ahead, there are multiple directions that the MCU could go, and the Russo brothers appear to be leaving the door open if they ever want to return. Now that the Disney and Fox merger has taken place behind the scenes, Marvel has access to a slew of fascinating characters that they couldn’t play with before, from the X-Men and Wolverine to the Fantastic Four. What if the Russos wanted to handle their MCU adaptations?
There also are major storylines from the comics that haven’t played out on screen yet, namely “Secret Wars.” This is an all-star story that again would team up a lot of major characters in the Marvel universe. Could the Russos be lured out of Marvel “retirement” to tell that story?
They have options. There are possibilities. So, while the Russos don’t have concrete plans, the door is open.
For now, see how they are bringing the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a close by grabbing tickets to AVENGERS: ENDGAME, currently playing at an AMC near you.
