GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY
In November 2019, Rian Johnson took audiences on a deadly, mysterious, and darkly humorous ride with the murder-mystery dark comedy KNIVES OUT. The movie, which starred Daniel Craig as quirky detective Benoit Blanc, centered on the suspected murder of Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) after the famed crime novelist was found with a slit throat in his private study at his massive country manor. Three years later, Johnson is back with a new story in the franchise with GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY, which is slated to land on Netflix later this year.
But before the movie makes its streaming debut, GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY is being given a limited release that will bring Johnson’s expansive cinematic universe to select AMC Theatres locations throughout the country. This special engagement gets underway just in time for the busy Thanksgiving holiday weekend with a November 23rd release. Ahead of the one-week limited release, we have put together a quick guide to the movie and what you can expect to see when it takes to the big screen…
A New Setting
The mystery in KNIVES OUT largely played out in the large Massachusetts mansion belonging to Harlan Thrombey against the backdrop of a New England autumn. Rian Johnson’s upcoming standalone sequel, however, will have a completely new and brighter setting: an idyllic, sunny private island off the coast of Greece. But don’t let the sunny locale make it appear as if there won’t be some darkness in the movie, as this is a murder mystery.
Detective Benoit Blanc Returns
Ana de Armas’ Marta Cabrera, Chris Evans’ Ransom Drysdale, and the rest of the family at the center of KNIVES OUT won’t be returning for the upcoming sequel, but one familiar face will be front and center throughout GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY. If you were a big fan of Daniel Craig’s quirky character Benoit Blanc, then you’ll be happy to find out that the private detective with an extreme attention to detail will once again be investigating a mysterious death.
This time around, Detective Benoit Blanc is called into action and sent to Greece when a death is reported at the island getaway belonging to a tech billionaire. Instead of investigating the apparent murder of a prolific crime novelist and the various family members who all had reasons to want him dead, Blanc will be peeling back the layers and interviewing the other guests and suspects of the mysterious death as he attempts to get to the center of this Mediterranean murder mystery.
A New Cast Of Suspects
The KNIVES OUT cast was one of the best collections of actors the murder mystery genre had seen in years, with the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, and others playing prominent roles. At first, it appeared as if there was no rival for that cast and that Rian Johnson would have his work cut out for him with the casting process for GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY, but the group of actors set to appear in the upcoming sequel is something else.
In addition to Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc, GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY will feature Edward Norton as billionaire Miles Bron, Janelle Monáe as Miles’ former business partner Cassandra “Andi” Brand, Kathryn Hahn as Senate candidate Clair Debella, and Leslie Odom Jr. as a scientist that goes by the name Lionel Toussaint. But that is just one layer of the cast…
Also set to appear throughout the movie is Dave Bautista as influencer Duke Cody, Madelyn Cline as his girlfriend Whiskey, Kate Hudson as model-turned-designer Birdie Jay, Jessica Henwick as her assistant Peg, and a number of other A-list stars and character actors.
The Mystery Unfolds In Theatres On November 23rd
If GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY is anything like its predecessor, you will want to see it on the big screen with a theatre full of moviegoers. Though it initially appeared as if the movie would be a streaming exclusive, Netflix and some of the largest cinema chains, including AMC Theatres, have reached a deal that will allow Rian Johnson’s second murder mystery film to have a limited theatrical release.
The movie opens Wednesday, November 23rd in just over 200 AMC Theatres throughout the country, but it won’t be there all that long, meaning you will need to make haste if you don’t want to miss out on the cinematic experience. The limited release will conclude on November 29th, a little less than a month before it debuts on Netflix.
GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY doesn’t open until November 23rd, but advance tickets are already available for the 200+ AMC Theatres locations that will be showcasing the film’s limited release.
