The creators at Pixar really know how to tap into their audience’s emotions and there is no greater evidence of that than INSIDE OUT. The 2015 film, which won the Academy AwardⓇ for Best Animated Feature, focused on an 11-year-old girl named Riley – voiced by Kaitlyn Dias – and how her personified inner feelings help her cope with recent changes in her life.
Now, the animation studio is ready to tackle another chapter of life and all the new emotions that come with it in INSIDE OUT 2. In the highly anticipated sequel, Riley finally turns 13 and begins to form more complex emotional needs. Here is everything you need to know before you watch it on the big screen.
As seen through the eyes of Riley, the first film explored common struggles that the audience could easily relate to, especially young people. Well, those fans have since grown older and so has our protagonist. The all-new feature will explore common struggles associated with one’s teenage years.
Headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone.

Returning cast members include Amy Poehler as the boundlessly energetic Joy, Phyllis Smith as shy and quiet Sadness, and the ever-hilarious Lewis Black as Anger. Tony Hale and Liza Lapira will also join the ensemble as Fear and Disgust, and Kensington Tallman will be making her debut as teenage Riley.
A fresh mix of talent will bring Riley’s newest emotions to life with Stranger Things alum Maya Hawke leading the crew as Anxiety. The film will also feature Ayo Edebiri from The Bear as Envy, renowned French actress Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui, and Golden Globe winner Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment.
The original INSIDE OUT was one of three films that earned Pixar veteran Pete Docter an Oscar, along with 2009’s UP and 2020’s SOUL. The movie was also the feature-length directorial debut for his co-director, Ronnie Carmen, and the sequel will also be overseen by a first-time feature director, but as a solo affair.
Helming INSIDE OUT 2 is Kelsey Mann, who will has worked in animation for two decades. Some of her most notable credits include Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends as a storyboard artist, Star Wars: The Clone Wars as a 3D story artist, and movies like MONSTERS UNIVERSITY and ONWARD as a story supervisor.
The Academy Award-nominated screenplay for INSIDE OUT was written by Meg LeFauve in collaboration with Josh Cooley and Pete Docter, from an original story by Docter and Ronnie Carmen. LeFauve is returning to pen INSIDE OUT 2 with support from Dave Holstein.
LeFauve’s most notable screenwriting credits for animated movies include the 2015 Pixar original THE GOOD DINOSAUR and 2022’s MY FATHER’S DRAGON – a Netflix film from another Oscar-nominated animation studio called Cartoon Saloon. Holstein’s credits lean into the purview of comedy and drama, most notably Raising Hope, Weeds, and a handful of Showtime series.
