Your Guide To Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1

March 7th, 2023Your Guide To Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING - PART ONE opens July 12th

James Bond may have all the best gadgets. Jason Bourne may have all the best moves. However, Ethan Hunt has a loyal crew of highly-skilled operatives, is a master of disguise, and is probably immortal, based on how he has managed to survive the many death-defying obstacles frequently thrown his way. There are mind-blowing mask reveals and high-wire stunts to expect when Hunt and his team of IMF agents reunite for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE.

This will be the seventh installment of the hit spy movie franchise – inspired by the 1960s TV series of the same name – that first launched in 1996, but has arguably only gotten better in the years since by going bigger on everything from the action to even the cast. How much bigger can the series go from here? See for yourself by checking out this breakdown of everything you need to know about MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE before it opens at AMC Theatres.

The Thriller Opens In July

Spy movie fans will be able to run to the theatre – much like Tom Cruise would – to finally check out MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE very soon. The blockbuster is set to come out on Wednesday, July 12th – five years after its previous entry.

This will also be the third installment of the franchise in a row to be released during the summer season, following 2015’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION and 2018’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT, which both also came out in July of their respective years. The first three installments were May releases, while 2011’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL is the only one so far to come out in the winter.

Tom Cruise Returns To Lead The Cast

Returning to play Ethan Hunt for the seventh time in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE is Tom Cruise, along with Ving Rhames – the only other actor to star in every installment – as Luther Stickell. Franchise veterans reprising their roles also include Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, Henry Czerny as IMF director Eugene Kitteridge in his first appearance in the franchise since the first film.

Franchise newcomers on the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE cast include the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Peggy Carter actor Hayley Atwell as a mysterious woman named Grace, as well as fellow MCU actor Pom Klementieff, who can also be seen in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 this summer as Mantis. Also joining the series are Cary Elwes (who starred in another espionage thriller this year called OPERATION FORTUNE: RUSE DE GUERRE), Esai Morales (known for TV shows like “NYPD Blue” or “Titans”), comedian and DEADPOOL 2 star Rob Delaney, and Shea Whigham – who recently joined another action packed franchise when he played Stasiak in 2021’s F9: THE FAST SAGA.

Christopher McQuarrie Directs

While Tom Cruise is undeniably the face of the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE franchise, the heart and soul of it is Christopher McQuarrie, who has been at its helm since he took over in 2015 as the director of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION. The filmmaker is coming back to direct his third installment with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE.

McQuarrie – who also worked with Cruise on JACK REACHER, EDGE OF TOMORROW, and TOP GUN: MAVERICK, to name a few – is the only director to have the honor of helming more than one MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie. The 1996 original was directed by Brian de Palma before John Woo put his signature style on the 2000 sequel. J.J. Abrams would stay signed on as a producer on every installment until now after helming MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III, but would pass the responsibility onto Brad Bird, who made GHOST: PROTOCOL his live-action debut.

An Eighth Installment Is Coming

It probably was not hard to tell based on the title, but MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE is not poised to be the final installment of the franchise. In fact, it is only the first half of one complete story.

Fans can expect even more big stunts and high-stakes thrills when Cruise and co. return for the eighth entry of the series, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART TWO. The concluding half of this mission is currently set to come out less than a year after its predecessor on June 28, 2024.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE, should you choose to see it when it comes to an AMC Theatres location near you, is poised to be an epic moment, not just for its own franchise, but for the spy movie genre in general.
