A Modern Day Comedy With Heart

What do you do when you realize you're living a romantic comedy? As a writer in her mid-20’s and living in Hollywood, Natalie Krinsky realized that she had been collecting souvenirs from previous relationships and came to the realization that she was indeed living in a romantic comedy. That moment sparked the inspiration for THE BROKEN HEARTS GALLERY, which she has been working on for the past ten years and is now playing at AMC. The movie is a modern comedy featuring some of the best young talent in the movies, from Geraldine Viswanathan, Dacre Montgomery, Molly Gordon and Phillipa Soo. Natalie was more than excited to share how each of these actors brought her characters to life on the big screen.
A Glass Half Full Romantic
Geraldine Viswanathan plays our emotional hoarder and eternal optimist, Lucy. You may recognize Geraldine from the 2018 comedy BLOCKERS with Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz, but in THE BROKEN HEARTS GALLERY she is the comedic force setting the tone for this modern romantic comedy. Natalie described Geraldine as “A comedian for today. She is like a Lucille Ball, and then there is this real layer of emotion underneath it”. Geraldine brings depth to Lucy, who breaks the mold of your traditional comedic character with the ability to pull you in emotionally, yet have you laughing out loud with a look or a witty comeback.
An Unexpected Heart Throb
In an unlikely accident, Lucy meets the secretive and level-headed Nick, played by Dacre Montgomery. Nick defines himself as always expecting the expected, but immediately realizes he is no match for Lucy and the messes he has to help her clean up. Unlike the heart-throb character he plays in “Stranger Things,” “Dacre has this innate sweetness and shyness, which is so unexcpected” Natalie describes which helped bring the character Nick to life on the big screen.
Two Alibis and a Jeff
Everyone needs friends that will stick by you through it all and Lucy is no exception. Her friends, Amanda, played by Molly Gordon provides the tough love to push Lucy out of bed and into the real world. To provide the soft, sometimes misguided outlook is Nadine, played by Phillipa Soo. As Natalie explains “though they have completely different views often on Lucy’s love life and how to deal with it, they ultimately support their friend unconditionally.” As they illustrate in the film, that they are willing to defend Lucy to any degree, even referencing themselves as “two alibis and a Jeff.” To round out this small group of friends is the unusually quiet boyfriend, Jeff played by Nathan Dales who provides a twist the typical silent female character portrayed in romantic comedies.
So grab your friends for this modern romantic comedy and get your tickets for THE BROKEN HEARTS GALLERY, now playing at AMC.
