Big Screen Power Couples

October 21st, 2022Big Screen Power Couples

For the first time in what seems like an eternity — though it has only been about six years — Julia Roberts and George Clooney are starring in a movie alongside each other, once again bringing their larger-than-life personalities to packed movie houses across the country. But instead of pulling off daring Las Vegas heists, dealing with dangerous minds, or vanquishing a money monster, the pair are in the new romantic comedy TICKET TO PARADISE, which is now playing at AMC Theatres.

With the big screen power couple getting back together to tell the story of two divorced parents trying to sabotage their daughter’s wedding, this got us thinking about their earlier movies, as well as other famous pairings that have made movie magic over the years. With duos like Hanks/Ryan, Thompson/Jordan, Bardem/Cruz, and more, the big screen has seen its fair share of great romances, dramas, and adventures over the years. Let’s dive into some of those now…

Julia Roberts And George Clooney

Dating back to 2001, Julia Roberts and George Clooney appeared in a total of four movies together — OCEAN’S ELEVEN, CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND, OCEAN’S TWELVE and MONEY MONSTER — before getting back together for Ol Parker’s romantic comedy, TICKET TO PARADISE. One of the most prolific on-screen duos of the 21st Century, and possibly of all time, the two Hollywood A-listers have a tremendous amount of chemistry and are able to play characters that treat each other as if they have known one another their entire lives.

While it’s true that Roberts has had some great pairings with the likes of Richard Gere, Hugh Grant and John Cusack over the years, it’s hard to think of a better actor than Clooney to appear alongside the Academy Award® winner, and vice versa.

Meg Ryan And Tom Hanks

Having a list of big screen power couples that doesn’t include Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks is like making a list of the best romantic comedies and not including SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE or YOU’VE GOT MAIL. Technically, you could make both without the dynamic on-screen pairing that fell in love over the radio before meeting in a chat room five years later, but where would the fun be in that?

Another movie featuring the duo of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks that doesn’t get brought up as much as the two Nora Ephron classics is John Patrick Shanley’s 1990 surrealist comedy, JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO, which saw Hanks play a neurotic office worker who agrees to sacrifice himself, opposite Ryan playing not one, not two, but three different characters.

Javier Bardem And Penelope Cruz

Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, unlike the rest of big screen power couples on this list, are an actual power couple in real life in addition to the silver screen. Since first sharing the screen in Bigas Luna’s 1992 romantic comedy, JAMÓN JAMÓN, the couple have appeared in multiple movies together in just about every subsequent decade.

With titles like VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA, LOVING PABLO, and EVERYBODY KNOWS featuring the couple, who married in 2010, it’s easy to see that they have as much chemistry on screen as they do in real life. On top of that, they have each won an Academy Award throughout their careers, with Bardem taking home an Oscar for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and Cruz taking one for her work in VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA.

Ryan Gosling And Emma Stone

Since first appearing alongside one another in the 2011 romantic comedy, CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have found themselves at the center of a trio of feature films, each being set in a different genre. Two years after falling in love in Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s modern-classic rom-com, Gosling and Stone teamed up again for Ruben Fleischer’s throwback crime flick, GANGSTER SQUAD.

A few years after that, Gosling and Stone popped up together once again in their most successful pairing to-date in Damien Chazelle’s musical, LA LA LAND, which saw the big screen couple play two young lovers trying to balance romance and their own personal dreams in the “City of Stars.”

Tessa Thompson And Michael B. Jordan

Tessa Thompson and Michael B. Jordan first shared the screen with the 2015 release of Ryan Coogler’s CREED, which not only continued the dormant ROCKY franchise but also gave it a new and refreshing spin on the boxing movie. In the movie, Jordan played Adonis Johnson, an up-and-coming boxer who first tries to escape the ghost of his deceased father, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), before carrying on his legacy in and out of the ring.

Tessa Thompson’s Bianca was a major part of CREED’s incredibly emotional story, and her relationship with the boxer would lead to some of the biggest moments in the movie as well as its sequel, CREED II. The two will share the screen once again in CREED III, which is slated to open on March 3, 2023.

Jennifer Lawrence And Bradley Cooper

Between 2012 and 2015, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, both of whom were incredibly busy at the time, appeared in four movies alongside one another, with all but one directed by David O. Russell.

This started with the tense romantic comedy, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, which earned Lawrence an Oscar® and a Golden Globe® and Cooper a ton of nominations. Next up was the 2013 crime caper, AMERICAN HUSTLE, which earned Lawrence another Golden Globe. The pair would play romantically-inclined characters again in 2014’s SERENA before teaming up with Russell again in 2015 for JOY, the biographical comedy about Miracle Mop inventor Joy Mangano.
