Chris Pratt and Tom Holland Take Their Marvel Chemistry Onward
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord may be on opposite corners of the universe following the events of AVENGERS: ENDGAME, but the pair of actors are about to share a completely new and original adventure in the animated realm. The MCU stars are playing elf brothers in the modern fantasy world of Pixar’s ONWARD. On-screen team-ups just don’t get better than this.
When Chris Pratt was cast in Pixar’s latest original movie, ONWARD, he called up Tom Holland right away to tell him they were brothers. Holland already calls the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY actor his "big LA brother" anyway. The pair bring their good-natured personalities and humor to the Lightfoot brothers as they go on a deeply personal quest to bring back their late father with the help of magic.
During a recent ONWARD press day, the actors opened up to AMC about what they most appreciated in each others' performances.
"From my heart's fire, I will say that ONWARD is a movie that very much must be rooted in a character, Ian, that is vulnerable and emotionally ripe," Chris Pratt said to Tom Holland. "There's a young kid in this movie who is different from what you are, because you are a little more grown than he is. But if you don't care deeply about this character, then the movie's not going to work. The movie definitely works, and it works because you put your, not just your voice but your soul into this guy. And the movie is better because of it."
Tom Holland and Chris Pratt first shared scenes together in Marvel’s quintessential culmination, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, in 2018. In the blockbuster, GUARDIAN OF THE GALAXY’s Peter Quill has no idea who the Avengers are or the existence of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. He grabs the web-slinging teen into a headlock as he points his blaster over to Iron Man and Doctor Strange. But, once they realize they have a common goal to take down Thanos, they join the same, iconic team.
Sadly, the two Marvel heroes were among the dusted by the hand of Thanos in INFINITY WAR. But after a grand time-travel plan was executed by the surviving Avengers in ENDGAME, Chris Pratt and Tom Holland returned for the comic book universe’s epic final battle against the Mad Titan. As you can imagine, the two really got to know each other while on the set of the Russo brothers’ massive AVENGERS films.
"As people around the world are aware, my life was flipped upside down pretty quickly — as Spider-Man does so often," Tom Holland told AMC. "It's a very daunting thing, coming into this world as a young actor. There's lots of temptations around that you can fall into and get trapped in. It's very hard to come away from those things once you've been there. So, I was so lucky that I had someone like Chris in my life to pave the way for me and be like, 'You know, when I grow up, I want to be like that guy.' Chris has not just been a big brother on screen, but also a big brother off screen. I'm the oldest brother (in my family), so it was quite nice to have someone to be like, 'Bro, this is really hard! I don't know how to do it.' And Chris has always been there."
The story of ONWARD comes from writer/director Dan Scanlon (MONSTERS UNIVERSITY), who was inspired by he and his brother's own personal tragedy. Scanlon and his brother lost their father at a young age and came across voice recordings of him that allowed them to hear his voice for the first time. ONWARD has the Lightfoot brothers using a scepter to bring their father back for 24 hours. But when only the lower half of him is manifested, they embark on a crazy road trip to complete the spell before their precious time with him runs out.
Holland and Pratt even had the chance to record in the sound booth together during the making of ONWARD. This gave the two voice talents a chance to play off one another on the comedic timing of the movie’s jokes and hit emotional chords about its touching subject matter. Pratt’s character, Barley, is an over-confident big brother to Holland’s Ian, a much more shy, reserved character. Seeing how these two translate the material to the screen looks like it’s going to be a real treat!
ONWARD also stars Julia-Louis Dreyfus as the Lightfoot brothers’ mother, Laurel, along with the voice talents of Octavia Spencer, Ali Wong and Lena Waithe. Pixar’s latest original movie opens is now available on AMC Theatres On Demand. Get yours today!
