Comedians in Upcoming Dramas

Comedians trying their hand at drama is not a new trend. Some of Hollywood’s greatest have gone from films that made us laugh until we cried to those that just made us sob. Take Jim Carrey in ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND or Robin Williams in GOOD WILL HUNTING. This month, more acclaimed comedians will join the ranks with their upcoming dramas. Can You Ever Forgive Me?
In the 1970s and 80s, Lee Israel was a bestselling author, who made her living writing biographies for celebrities like Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estée Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. But by 1990, Lee was nearly broke, behind on rent and unable to get published — thus began her one-woman forgery business, “embellishing” hundreds of letters in the voices of literary greats.
CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? is based on Lee’s true story and memoir of the same name, starring Melissa McCarthy. The actress first gained recognition for her role in the TV series “Gilmore Girls” and later went on to star in the sitcom “Mike & Molly.” But it was her performance as the brash Megan in the smash comedy BRIDESMAIDS that launched her to A-lister status.
McCarthy, a former stand-up comedian, has played funny women for the majority of her career, and while CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? has laughable moments, this film shows her more serious side.
“I have become so attached to Lee that I just want people to see her for everything she was: for her talent, her intelligence, her caustic, remarkable wit and to also see her difficult circumstances, her flaws, her broken heart, her anger,” McCarthy said. “I want people to love her as much as I do.”

The Sisters Brothers
When you think of John C. Reilly, you may think of the Golden Globe-nominated WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY, the NASCAR comedy TALLADEGA NIGHTS or the forever funny STEP BROTHERS. But Reilly started his film career in the 1989 drama CASUALTIES OF WAR and continued to play serious roles throughout the 90s and early 2000s before he became a comedic icon.
In his latest film, Reilly stars as one half of an infamous duo of assassins. THE SISTERS BROTHERS, co-starring Joaquin Phoenix, is a western dramady set in 1850s Oregon. The Sisters brothers are hired to find and kill a gold prospector and chemist, who stole from their boss. But the scientist’s secret might be worth more than they know, and a simple pursuit across the wild West turns into something a lot more dangerous.
Jake Gyllenhaal also joins the cast of THE SISTERS BROTHERS, based on Patrick Dewitt's praised novel of the same name. Get your tickets at AMC today.
