Iconic D&D Creatures To Appear On The Big Screen

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES opens March 31st.

One of the most appealing aspects of the popular role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons, is that the character that each participant plays as is one of their own creation. Therefore, there is no reason to expect any particular iconic character to appear in one of the most anticipated movies of 2023, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES. However, there will be a plentiful variety of unique creatures that fans of the game will surely recognize.

The trailer for the latest cinematic adaptation of the game – co-written and co-directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley – is chock-full of Easter Eggs that surely would give fans reasons to be excited for the movie. These include sightings of many of the most glorious, bizarre, and dangerous living obstacles a participant tends to face when rolling the 20-sided die. Before DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES comes to AMC Theatres on Friday, March 31st, allow us to be your guide to some of the most iconic creatures that will grace the big screen – starting with one you probably could have guessed already.

Dragons

What would a Dungeons & Dragons movie be without some dragons? There were a couple different species of the highly recognizable fairy tale beasts that we could identify from the HONOR AMONG THIEVES trailer, including the Silver Dragon, which is known for its ability to spew devastating blasts of acid. We also know from the teaser that the film’s central heroes will encounter a dragon of gargantuan size known as a Themberchaud, which is of the more common fire-breathing variety.

Owlbear

During one action-packed moment in the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES trailer, we see Doric – a Tiefling druid played by IT star Sophia Lillis – shapeshift into what Justice Smith’s sorcerer character, Simon, identifies as an Owlbear. It should not take much experience with the source material to figure out how this creature got its name. However, it should be noted that this monstrosity takes more heavily from its furrier half of its lineage than the winged one, being known for its ferocious characteristics that have earned it a fearsome reputation in the wilderness of the Forgotten Realms.

Mimic

Speaking of shapeshifting, there are some creatures featured prominently in Dungeons & Dragons who specialize in deception. One such being is aptly referred to as a “Mimic,” which often appears in the form of a treasure chest to lure in players with the false promise of a grand reward. The trailer for DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES sees Michelle Rodriguez’s character, a barbarian named Holga, learn about Mimics the hard way when encountering one that flashes its jagged teeth at her before using its tongue to launch itself in her direction.

Displacer Beast

The DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES characters will also be forced to participate in an arena, where they come face-to-face with a Displacer Beast. Also known by other names – such as a dirlagraun or a omlarcat – this predator bears a slight resemblance an Earthly puma, but with six legs and five-foot-long barbed tentacles protruding from its back. The creature’s name comes from its magical ability to appear in a different position than where they truly stand and hide from adversaries very easily.

Gelatinous Cube

The aforementioned arena scene from DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES sees some of the cast leaping out of the way of a Displacer Beast and right into an athcoid, which is more commonly referred as a “gelatinous cube.” The characters will surely regret the decision to take cover inside this large mass of translucent matter because very few who are encompassed by it tend to survive and often succumb to its acidic ooze. Yet, it has proven vulnerable to most physical attacks and, especially, certain magical spells.

Kenku

Some creatures in the Forgotten Realms can be an obstacle of a more sophisticated nature, such as Kenku. Boasting the appearance of a flightless, large-beaked bird, but of average human height, this avian race are typically known to be selfish thieves whose central motivation is to acquire riches and power at any means necessary. They can also be back-stabbers in a more literal sense, proving to be efficient in combat, but not opposed to letting a compatriot be defeated for their own self-gain, either.

Lizardfolk

Yet another race of creatures that do not take much experience with Dungeons & Dragons to visualize on one’s own are the Lizardfolk. Unlike Kenku, these reptilian humanoids have no interest in money, but are easily captivated by food, which often ends up sealing their downfall, even in combat. However, without anything tasty to distract them with, these naturally armored warriors can be a force to be reckoned with.

There are the creatures that we could confirm are appearing in DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES. See how many more there are to behold by checking out the movie at an AMC Theatres location near you on March 31st!
