Into the Spider-Verse Earns the Gold Statuette
Spider-Man has been a staple of the big screen for years now, though the character has really stepped up his presence since joining the MCU in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. Last year, audiences saw Tom Holland’s take in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, and he’s expected to be part of this year’s AVENGERS: ENDGAME and of course SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME.
But a different take on the Spider-Man legend bowled audiences over in the back half of 2018, and the celebration of SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE continued on Sunday night at the Academy AwardsÒ. The film took home the Oscar® for Best Animated Feature, triumphing over noted animation powerhouses Disney and Pixar with RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET and INCREDIBLES 2.
INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE tells the origin story of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a Brooklyn teenager who is bitten by a radioactive spider, and then must contend with the lofty mantle of being Spider-Man.
Only, Miles gets training from the actual Spider-Man, Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) — or one of them at least. Because in this movie, there are multiple spider-people from different dimensions, and they all must team up to help Miles take down Kingpin (Liev Schreiber) and restore order to the universe.
The animated Oscar winner is both a critical hit, as well as a box-office smash. Earlier, we were able to take a behind-the-scenes tour of Sony and meet with the team responsible for this crowd-pleaser, where they discussed the emotional bonds that went into the creation of the characters:
At the press junket for the movie, the cast also talked to AMC about placing the emphasis on Miles Morales, the humor that comes from combining numerous spider-people and the joy of Spider-Ham:
It’s no surprise a sequel to SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE has already been confirmed. Hopefully, we’ll see more of the spider-people introduced in the original film and maybe even meet some new characters.
We can’t wait for what’s next in this new series and style of animation. One thing’s for sure: We’ll keep you updated here on the AMC Scene as we learn more.
