Love, Simon: A Refreshing YA Story

It's safe to say that Nick Robinson has been through a lot in his young career. In the past five years, he has built a house in the woods, been chased by dinosaurs, battled aliens and even played Melissa Joan Hart's nephew. But in a matter of months, he is set to take on his most important role yet.
The Jurassic World star will headline Greg Berlanti's Love, Simon — an adaptation of the acclaimed Youngadult novel Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda. The film isn't released until March 2018, but 20th Century Fox have just unveiled the first trailer. Check it out below:
A New Kind Of YA Story
There's no shortage of YA adaptations in today's day and age. And Nick Robinson is no stranger to the genre either, having starred in both The 5th Wave and Everything, Everything. However, with the actor portraying a closeted gay teen in the upcoming comedy-drama film, Love, Simon could herald the introduction of a new wave of Lbgtq YA films.
After an abundance of films centered around star-crossed boys and girls falling in love with each other, Love, Simon will not just introduce us to a new type of YA story, it could very well revitalize the genre itself. Moreover, with so many tragic LGBTQ films out there, it will be refreshing to see a more comedic and cheerful story, highlighting that gay teens can achieve happiness too.
The Love, Simon trailer certainly captures the genre of the piece perfectly. With plenty of emotion, drama and comedy in a mere two minutes, it's set expectations high for what could be one of 2018's best films.
