ELEMENTAL opens in theatres June 16th
When it comes to Pixar, there have been plenty of films that have made fans laugh, smile and cry all at the same time, from some of their earlier hits like the TOY STORY, to their newest additions, like 2022’s LIGHTYEAR or even 2017’s COCO. And in 2023, Pixar is set to take fans into a whole new world – full of earth, air, fire and water.
No, this is not the new AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER movie that is in the works. Rather, Pixar is bringing ELEMENTAL to theatres in 2023. Since the project was revealed, we’ve learned some exciting things about the upcoming movie, including when you can see it playing at your favorite AMC Theatres location. The following is a breakdown of the things that we know about ELEMENTAL.
During CinemaCon 2023, attendees were lucky enough to get the chance to watch twenty minutes of the Disney and Pixar film in 3D, where they were shown a dynamic, vibrant and immersive world for fans to love. Based on the footage, the titular elements – Fire, Earth, Water and Air – come to life in a beautiful world-building experience that is beautifully crafted, featuring the charactes Ember and Wade.

What could go wrong in a city where fire, water, earth and air have learned to coexist? And what happens when two opposing elements end up finding out they have a lot more in common than they thought? That’s what ELEMENTAL looks to answer.
In an article from Variety, ELEMENTAL asks the question, “what if the classic elements that we all knew were alive and lived together in a city?” In this, the viewers meet Wade, a man made of water and Ember, a woman made of fire – two young adults living in the city. And eventually, through sheer circumstances, despite being different elements, they discover that they have a lot more in common on the inside than they realized.
While the main cast list for ELEMENTAL has been kept pretty under wraps for some time, fans can be assured that the two stars of the film have been picked, and those are Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie. The two actors will be voicing Ember and Wade, respectively.
Athie actually had the chance to speak to Entertainment Weekly about the role at D23 2022, saying that it was “near and dear” to his heart, and that he was so honored to be a part of it. Lewis also said that the reason she joined the film was that the director gave her a story that felt “so honest,” and that she related so much to the character Ember overall.
The two actors have each been in multiple different movies and TV shows. Lewis was in the Netflix film, THE HALF OF IT, and was also on the CW show, “Nancy Drew.” Athie was the star of the Netflix series, “Archive 81,” and was in several movies including JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION, FRONT RUNNER, THE CIRCLE and more.
ELEMENTAL is going to be in good hands at Pixar, as the person who is taking the reins of the movie has been in Pixar for some time. Peter Sohn is going to be directing the movie. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Sohn has already done a lot for the animation company.
Not only has Sohn already directed a Pixar film before – THE GOOD DINOSAUR – but he also has done voice work for several other Pixar films, including LIGHTYEAR, MONSTERS UNIVERSITY, and RATATOUILLE. As this is his second directorial feature, it’ll be exciting to see what he brings to the table.
Sohn spoke about his connection with ELEMENTAL at the Disney Content Showcase in Singapore (via a Variety). In addition to speaking about how being the son of immigrants and his perspective on his parents influenced the story idea, Sohn also discussed how his relationship with his partner inspired him:
“I married someone that wasn’t Korean, and there was a lot of culture clash with that in my world. And that brought to me to this idea of finding opposites. And the question of what if fire fell in love with water came.
Truly, it sounds like ELEMENTAL is going to be make a vibrant and immersive splash when it opens on June 16 in RealD 3D, and it’s one of our most anticipated animated movies in 2023. Be sure to be there in your local AMC theatre when ELEMENTAL finds its ways to a movie screen.
