After some light news days at San Diego Comic-Con, there's light at the end of the tunnel. We just learned the casting of a major Marvel heroine. In 2015, Ant-Man jumped from a C-list superhero to one of the most popular comic book characters around. Following that success, Marvel gave the green light to a sequel, Ant-Man and The Wasp. Seeing how the film is still one year away, there's been very little we've heard about it... until now.

At the Marvel Studios panel during SDCC2017, the studio made a slew of announcements for multiple films. One that got the spotlight was Ant-Man and The Wasp, and the film's panel gave us some casting announcements that are sure to make jaws drop.

Michelle Pfeiffer Is Janet Van Dyne

Remember the major casting announcement I mentioned? Michelle Pfeiffer, best known in comic book circles for playing Catwoman in Batman Returns, will be taking up the wings and armor to play none other than Janet Van Dyne, the original Wasp.

Since she wasn't previously cast, 2015's Ant-Man was shy about showing Janet. We never really saw her – a hat even covered her face in a family picture – so it's great to assign a face to the flying legend.

Her role in the sequel is still a mystery. At first, I believed she'd be shown in a flashback, but then I remembered Janet never technically died in Ant-Man; she just shrunk into the Quantum realm. That has me wondering whether we'll get to see her in present day... maybe Scott and Hope will make it their mission to rescue her? For Hank Pym's mental state and decades-long guilt, I sure hope so.

I'm quite surprised by this announcement. Usually, we get rumors or rumblings about a certain actor circling huge roles like this, but there was literally no indication that she would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Laurence Fishburne Is Dr. Bill Foster, a.k.a. Goliath

That's not the only heroic excitement we received from the panel. We got yet another DC to Marvel jump: Laurence Fishburne (who plays Perry White in the DCEU) will be playing another Marvel superhero: Dr. Bill Foster, also known as Goliath.

In the comics, the character started up as a worker in Tony Stark's factory in the Plans and Research Division. He gets involved with Hank Pym after the scientist gets stuck in his tiny size, and Tony Stark asks him to get him back to normal. He eventually gets a hold of the treasured Pym particles and uses them to change his size, and become a superhero.

His character doesn't have a happy ending in the comics though, as he's brutally murdered by a cloned Thor created by Tony Stark prior to the superhero Civil War (I know, comics). I'm quite excited to see Fishburne possibly getting some action.

Hannah John-Kamen Is The Ghost

Hannah John Kamen was cast last month in a mystery role. Fortunately now we know who she'll be playing: The Ghost. Ok, for the majority of you that just went "Huh?" Ghost is a pretty mysterious character in the comics. Long story short, he (yes, he's a guy in the comics) is essentially a genius anticapitalist saboteur, making it his mission to destroy various companies and governments.

John-Kamen is a great actress, so I can't wait to see her in this mysterious role. Aside from these casting announcements, Randall Park was cast as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jimmy Woo, which we already (sorta knew).

Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne will have a lot on their plate for the character's second cinematic outing. Ant-Man and The Wasp fly into theaters on July 6, 2018.
