BLUE BEETLE opens August 18th
The Blue Beetle has evolved over the decades since its introduction by Fox Comics in 1939, and on August 18th the modern version of the superhero will take flight at AMC Theatres. In 2006, DC introduced Jaime Reyes to comic book readers, expanding upon the Blue Beetle mythos. This version of the Blue Beetle served as the inspiration for director Angel Manuel Soto's vision for the big screen depiction of the teenage superhero in BLUE BEETLE.
From Comics to Big Screen
In the comics, Blue Beetle has been a member of the Teen Titans and the Justice League, but the movie will serve as an origin story of an older Jaime Reyes. Recent college grad Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the inspiring superhero, Blue Beetle.
In April at CinemaCon, Angel Manuel Soto spoke about the origin story and how the movie will veer from the comic book pages for the big screen adaptation. The director set out to make a movie that was authentic, but also vibrant and inspirational. The film explores the emotional arc of a young man rising up to the challenge and growing as a character to find his way amidst the life-changing event in a city that couldn't be defined by reality. Soto expressed the importance to build a new world that would integrate the vibe of El Paso and Miami in the '80s with the fictional Palmera City, which would be a melting pot of Latin American cultures.

A Family Affair
In addition to Soto, actor Xolo Maridueña took the stage at CinemaCon to share more about the family dynamic in the newest installment in the DC Extended Universe. Unlike traditional superhero movies, the story of Jaime is not of an isolated hero who keeps his identity hidden from the people he loves. Instead, his new-found powers are shared with his family members, who empower and motivate him to become the Blue Beetle. Xolo shared that “the family is what saves his character, it’s a beautiful family story.” The inspirational story Jaime and the Reyes family in the first stand-alone Latin American superhero movie is very personal to the Puerto Rican director, but he shared that the amazing thing about this movie is that it will resonate with audiences and families beyond the Latin community.

In the comics, the Scarab provides Jaime with a variety of superpowers and abilities, especially when Jaime is in danger. When the scarab activates, it crawls out on to Jaime's back and generates a high-tech suit of powered armor around his body that is resilient enough that it can protect him against re-entry from Earth's orbit. El Blue Beetle (Escarabajo Azul) se ha evolucionado a través décadas desde su introducción por Fox Comics en 1939 y la versión moderna del superhéroe tomará vuelo en AMC Theatres el 18 de Agosto. En el 2006, la mitología del Escarabajo Azul se extendió cuando DC nos presentó a Jaime Reyes en sus cómics. Un Asunto Familiar
Acompañando a Soto, el actor Xolo Maridueña subió al escenario para compartir más de la dinámica familiar en la entrega del Universo extendido de DC. A diferencia de las pelís tradicionales de superhéroes, la historia de Jaime no es esa de un héroe aislado que esconde su identidad de los que ama. En vez, comparte sus nuevos poderes con su familia, quienes lo empoderan y motivan a ser el Blue Beetle. Xolo compartió que “la familia es lo que salva a su personaje, es una bella historia familiar.” La historia inspiradora de Jaime y la familia Reyes en la primera independiente película de un superhéroe Latinoamericano es muy personal para el director Puertorriqueño, pero comparte que la asombrosa cosa de esta pelí es que resonara con el público y familias más de allá de la comunidad Latina.

En los cómics, el Escarabajo proporciona a Jaime varios superpoderes y habilidades, especialmente cuando Jaime está en peligro. Cuando el escarabajo se activa, sale de la espalda de Jaime y genera unaarmadura poderosa de alta tecnología por todo su cuerpo que es tan resistente que lo protege al reentrar la órbita del planeta.
