Emilia Clarke: From Essos to the Big Screen
To most fans, Emilia Clarke will always be Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons (et al.) from "Game of Thrones." The role shot Clarke to super-stardom, and since, she's starred in a handful of films. But now that the fantasy series has ended, will Clarke take on more movie roles? We can only hope. At least we won't have to wait long for her next big screen release — LAST CHRISTMAS opens at AMC on November 8.
In the rom-com, Clarke plays the lead, Kate, a bundle of skepticism and bad decisions, who works as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop. There, she meets Tom (Henry Golding), a hopeless romantic who gradually breaks down Kate's barriers.
LAST CHRISTMAS looks like a sweet holiday movie to give us those warm and fuzzy feelings, and as we anticipate its release, we look back at the movie roles that led Clarke here.
Terminator Genisys
Emilia Clarke made her big screen debut in 2012 with SPIKE ISLAND, followed up by DOM HEMINGWAY in 2013. But her first major movie role was in TERMINATOR GENISYS, in which she played a reincarnation of Sarah Connor. If you're a fan of the franchise, you know the upcoming TERMINATOR: DARK FATE will reset the timeline, but GENISYS will remain a jumping off point for Clarke.
Me Before You
In the romance-drama ME BEFORE YOU, Emilia Clarke proved she's a leading lady. She co-starred as Lou, a quirky girl who forms a relationship with a recently paralyzed man she's taking care of (Sam Claflin). The movie was a tearjerker from beginning to end and a hit among audiences. In an interview with Screen Rant, Clarke said that "Lou is incredibly close to who I am."
Solo: A Star Wars Story
In 2018, Emilia Clarke landed her biggest movie role yet in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY. Her character, Qi'ra, was a new addition to the anthology, a young girl who grew up on the streets with Han Solo. To save herself, she chose a life of deception and secrecy and after a bloody battle became the figurehead of the crime syndicate Crimson Dawn. If there's one word to describe Qi'ra, it's "survivor."
Don't miss Emilia Clarke in her next movie, LAST CHRISTMAS, in theatres November 8.
