The FAST AND THE FURIOUS franchise cast caused a frenzy on social media when Tyrese Gibson called out the Rock for pushing back the release dates of the last two remaining sequels. While the heat has since subsided, fans of the franchise can now truly rejoice with the news that key players are set to return for the ninth installment.
During a Facebook Live stream, Vin Diesel brought out Jordana Brewster and announced her involvement in the sequel, along with the news that Justin Lin would return to direct:
“You wanted 9 and 10 to be incredible. We’ve heard your concerns about the saga and where it needs to arrive in its final chapters.”
Last time we saw Brewster as Mia Toretto was in FURIOUS 7, in which she played an integral role. She was referenced via a photograph in the last installment, THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS. Her return in FAST 9 will definitely bring to a close fans' worries that the franchise was alienating its core cast. Not too long ago, Michelle Rodriguez threatened to leave the franchise due to the treatment of its female cast. And as previously mentioned, Tyrese Gibson also expressed discontent due to the Rock's FAST spinoff.
The return of Justin Lin as director will also surely put smiles on fans' faces. He directed the fourth installment, FAST & FURIOUS, but he's more known for directing the critically-acclaimed FAST FIVE and FAST & FURIOUS 6. With Lin back in the director's chair, there's no doubt FAST 9 and 10 will end the franchise with a loud bang.
FAST & FURIOUS 9 is scheduled to release April 2, 2021.
