The MonsterVerse expands in 2019! The sequel to the 2014 GODZILLA, often called GODZILLA 2 and more properly known as GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, opens in May.
The new movie features not only our favorite giant atomic lizard, but also a whole host of giant monsters — or kaiju, if you want to be proper — drawn from Japanese films. Here’s everything we know about GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS so far.
The Godzilla: King of the Monsters Release Date
GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS opens on May 31, 2019.
The GODZILLA sequel was originally set to arrive on June 8, 2018. When Legendary Entertainment left its partnership with Universal and went back to Warner Bros., the company pushed KONG: SKULL ISLAND forward first. That meant GODZILLA 2 got pushed into 2019.
The sequel was set for a late March release. Then Warner Bros. moved GODZILLA 2 to a much more summer-friendly date: May 31. That release date puts it a week after Disney’s ALADDIN and on the same weekend as the Elton John movie ROCKETMAN.
The Godzilla: King of the Monsters Trailer
There have been two GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS trailers so far. The first one arrived in late July 2018 and drove fans crazy thanks in part to its use of music. The first GODZILLA 2 trailer music is “Clair de Lune” by Claude Debussy.
The second trailer is the one embedded above, and it drove us even more insane thanks to the revealing shots of multiple monsters. In addition to Godzilla, there are three more monsters: Rodan, Mothra and the three-headed King Ghidorah.
There will probably be one more trailer before the May 31 release date, but we don’t have any information about when it will arrive.
The Monsters in Godzilla: King of the Monsters
We’ll get to the story in a minute; right now the only thing that is really important is the GODZILLA 2 monsters. Yes, there are at least four monsters in the movie. There’s Godzilla, obviously, the 355-foot-tall atomic lizard which is primarily a guardian of natural life on Earth.
In the Japanese films, Mothra is often a benevolent character. The kaiju has appeared in both caterpillar and giant moth forms and is typically accompanied by twin humanoid fairies who act as the creature’s spokespeople. Whether the twins will be in GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is unknown. Mothra has a wingspan of 803 feet.
Rodan has been a villain and a comic character, and we don’t know precisely how the creature will behave in GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS. We do know that Rodan is 154-feet-tall, with a mind-boggling wingspan of 871 feet.
The three-headed King Ghidorah tends to be a villain, but the precise nature of the character has changed over the years. The GODZILLA 2 version of King Ghidorah is 521-feet-tall, which means he towers over Godzilla.
The Godzilla: King of the Monsters Story
So, in the 2014 GODZILLA, we saw the massive lizard battle a host of MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms). An organization called Monarch studies creatures like Godzilla and MUTOs and has uncovered information on Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah. While some of the GODZILLA 2 characters are aligned with Monarch, there is another organization that has mysterious plans of its own for the monsters.
Here’s how Legendary and Warner Bros. have described the story:
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species — thought to be mere myths — rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
The Godzilla: King of the Monsters Cast
Based on the trailers, one of the main stars of GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is Millie Bobby Brown, who first leapt into the public eye by playing Eleven on “Stranger Things.” She plays Madison Russell, the daughter of a Monarch scientist.
Madison’s mother, Dr. Emma Russell, is a paleobiologist played by Vera Farmiga of THE CONJURING. Mother and daughter are kidnapped by an organization that appears to oppose Monarch. The scientist has been working to create a system of communication with the giant creatures. That likely makes her a person of interest for the new group. The first GODZILLA 2 trailer features Dr. Russell talking about what role the kaiju may play in the natural order and how that could affect humanity.
Kyle Chandler plays Dr. Mark Russell, Emma’s ex-husband who goes on a rescue mission to save his daughter and former partner. He’s assisted by a character played by Sally Hawkins (THE SHAPE OF WATER) and Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, the character played by Ken Watanabe, who returns from GODZILLA.
There are many more people on hand, too, from Bradley Whitford (GET OUT) to Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”) and Thomas Middleditch (“Silicon Valley”). Zhang Ziyi (HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) plays a Monarch scientist while O’Shea Jackson Jr. (STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON) plays a military specialist.
