In just about every year for the past decade or so, some of the most anticipated films have been superhero movies – including ones that take inspiration from the world of Marvel Comics. What makes these releases so especially exciting for life-long fans of the source material is the chance to see their favorite heroes – and villains – be portrayed on the big screen for the first time, or even make their latest return to it. Both cases can be said about the Marvel Characters slated to show up in the most anticipated comic book movies coming to AMC Theatres of 2024, as seen below.
Most of Sony’s live-action Marvel films so far – which, technically, exist outside of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe – have put some of Spider-Man’s most fearsome foes in the spotlight, such as Venom or Morbius. However, on February 14, fans will see the big screen debut of one of Peter Parker’s most trusted allies in director S.J. Clarkson’s MADAME WEB. Dakota Johnson stars as a younger version of Cassandra Webb, who, in the comics, is depicted as an elderly woman without the ability to see or walk, but possesses clairvoyant abilities that help her and others fight evil in Manhattan.
In MADAME WEB, Cassandra uses her psychic powers to protect three young girls – Julia Carpenter (Sydney Sweeney), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced), and Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor) – targeted by a mysterious man. The villain in question is Ezekiel Sims – a man granted arachnoid-like abilities by a strange ritual, which he actually uses to protect other Spider-People like him in the comics, for the most part. This new, cinematic version of the character – played by THE MAURITARIAN star Tahar Rahim – could just be a whole new interpretation, or there may be more to him than we have been led to believe so far.
MADAME WEB opens February 14
It wouldn’t be entirely inaccurate to say that Ryan Reynolds revolutionized the comic book movie genre when he brought one of the most uproarious and foul-mouthed characters in Marvel’s repertoire to the big screen in a raunchy, hyper-violent, R-rated action-comedy that surprisingly ruled the box office in 2016. Following the hit 2018 sequel, the Merc with a Mouth is finally making his MCU debut on July 26 with DEADPOOL 3. The highly anticipated 2024 movie is said to be maintaining its adult-oriented content and is being helmed by Reynolds’ FREE GUY and THE ADAM PROJECT director Sean Levy.
DEADPOOL 3 is going to mark a huge moment in comic book movie history for a few different reasons. Easily one of the most thrilling is that Hugh Jackman is returning to play his most iconic and career-defining character, Wolverine, for what will, supposedly, be the last time after previously retiring from the role after 2017’s LOGAN. Wade Wilson’s dysfunctional relationship with the adamantium-clawed X-Men member has only been hinted at in the previous DEADPOOL movies, but the pair of mutants’ long-awaited big screen team-up is finally set to take place in the threequel, which also sees the Academy AwardⓇ nominee don Wolverine’s famous yellow costume.
Following the debut of MADAME WEB, Sony will be returning to put the spotlight on another one of Spidey’s greatest enemies, and this one is easily one of the more vicious villains of them all. TRIPLE FRONTIER director J.C. Chandor helms KRAVEN THE HUNTER, which tells the story of how the Russian-born Sergei Kravinoff came to be such a notoriously deadly and accomplished predator of the world’s greatest beasts, including man. Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the eponymous anti-hero, which marks his third comic book character portrayal following his appearances as the title character of the KICK-ASS movies and brief stint in the MCU as Pietro “Quicksilver” Maximoff in 2015’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.
Even the most casual fans of Spider-Man have probably heard of the webslinger’s elusive, “shape-shifting” foe, the Chameleon – whose real name is Dmitri Smerdyakov. However, only the most passionate comic book enthusiasts likely know that the master of disguise is actually the half-brother of Sergei Kravinoff. The siblings’ strained relationship and violent upbringing under the advisement of their merciless father – played by Russell Crowe – will be explored in KRAVEN THE HUNTER, in which the Chameleon will be portrayed by Fred Hechinger.
2024 Is poised to be a great year to be a comic book movie fan with the big screen debut of these beloved characters. We cannot wait to see where Madame Web’s psychic visions lead her, what finally brings Deadpool and Wolverine together, and the hunt that Kraven the Hunter’s animalistic tendencies lure him onto. See for yourself when these exciting upcoming superhero movies come out in an AMC Theatres location near you!
